The Great Gatsby, Ch. 8-9

Daisy did not wait for Gatsby when he went overseas for the war. Based on what you know of the characters, would it have benefited Gatsby if Daisy did wait for him, or would things have turned out even worse? Please reference sections of the novel to support your response.

Your response should be approximately 50-words in length. Be sure to use textual evidence when appropriate. Going over or under the suggested word count is acceptable as long as your response is detailed and direct. Also, please review your response for correctness before posting--nothing is worse than an error-ridden post.

  1. I think that if daisy had waited for Gatsby then things would have turned out for the better. If Daisy had waited she would've never met and married Tom. Without this marriage she wouldn't have had the urge to cheat on Tom with Gatsby, which led to the fight in the hotel room between Daisy's two lovers. This in turn would've prevented Daisy from accidentally killing Mrs. Wilson, and Mr. Wilson coming over and killing Gatsby. Though I doubt Daisy would be a better lover and would probably still treat Gatsby terrible, it's better than dying.

    1. The hotel incident is a horrible situation for Gatsby. If Daisy would have waited, it would have been so much better than losing his life. I agree completely.

    2. I agree with mallory that Gatsby wouldn't have been killed, but I disagree with the last sentence. Seeing how Daisy acted, I believe dying was better than being with her. Had he never met her, then the situation would have been way better for him. He wouldn't have died or possibly marry a greedy psycho if she had waited.

    3. I agree with Mallory, a terrible Daisy would be better than death but I also think she would leave him within five years saying that she needs to "find herself" or that he "just couldn't make her happy anymore".

  2. I think that the only way there could be a decent outcome is if Daisy is not part of Gatsby's life and he manages to just get over her. If Daisy did wait for Gatsby I think there would be potentially equally disastrous results. Because of Gatsby's fondness for pursuing and conquering goals I think he would get bored of Daisy resulting in him engaging in extramarital affairs. This of course would drive Daisy away and before you know it they are in the same messy situations with equally messy results.

  3. i think that if daisy ended up waiting for him to get back from war instead of not waiting, gatsby's scenario would've been better. he wouldn't have spent five years planning on getting her back and he probably wouldn't have died. daisys relationship with tom would have never happened and therefore any relation to mr. wilson would happen. this would prevent the deaths of myrtle, mr. wilson, and gatsby. it wouldve been best if daisy waited for gatsby unless he still died after getting back by some weird twist of fate. even then it wouldve been better to die then than spend five years chasing her.

    1. I disagree, as I believe Daisy was the prime motivating factor to Gatsby's success. Needless to say, Daisy was not a healthy motivating factor for Gatsby, but it was more than nothing. Had Daisy not influenced Gatsby to strive for more, he very well may have never done so. Money isn't everything, but it makes everything a bit easier; it obviously promoted a thriving social life, as he was hardly ever alone during the later years of his life. The man threw grand parties very frequently, inviting many opportunities to meet new people. Even if Daisy wasn't a positive influence on Gatsby, she at least helped him achieve a status of wealth, which, as I said before, makes other aspects of life just a bit simpler.

  4. I think that if Daisy had waited for Gatsby things would have been a bit better. As we know with Fitzgerald, he writes his own experiences into the story. Just as Zelda was shallow, so is Daisy's character. Had she waited for Gatsby, he would come out of the military as a poor man, after all, he was the son of farmers (a profession that that didn't pay well at the time). She probably would have rejected him then. In this scenario, he would have instantly seen the poor character of Daisy. Yes, while he may be heartbroken, he doesn't have to go years pursuing Daisy for just another failure. This alternate reality though is only a bit better though. It was the pursuing of Daisy that made Gatsby strive to be rich. Daisy was his motivation and he no longer had that, and being in a society that put pressure and importance on wealth, Gatsby's life would be only a little improvement.

  5. I believe if Daisy had waited for Gatsby, situations would have been better. Daisy had the thought of being rich and nothing else to go for in life. That's all this girl wanted. If she would have waited, then Gatsby would have came home from the military and had the pressure of being rich for her. He didn't have that at all. He was the son of a farmer, which at this time wasn't anything really. I believe Daisy would have then rejected him which would break his heart. If he doesn't have to do all that for Daisy, then he can reject future failure with Daisy, by not being able to give her the money she wants. Also, if Daisy would have waited she wouldn't have married Tom. The hotel incident caused Gatsby to die. Gatsby wouldn't have been killed by Mr. Wilson. Therefore, the situation for Gatsby would have been better.

    1. I have to disagree, had Daisy rejected Gatsby when he came home poor, he still would have entered the unforgiving life he ended up in with the hopes of winning her back. Daisy, being like F. Scott's Zelda, would have done exactly the same thing, possibly even at a faster pace. Gatsbys fate would have been far worse had Daisy remained waiting for him.

  6. i believe that if Daisy had waited for Gatsby the situation would have been better. Gatsby had waited so long for her and when finding out that she was married, it made him become obsessive. Had she waited, then he wouldn't have become this way and in the end die trying to see and run away with her. Although I believe Daisy waiting would have kept Gatsby from dying after the hotel argument, I still think that Daisy would have been an awful and greedy wife no matter who she married.

    1. I disagree with Terra that it would have made his life better with the fact of he wouldn't have become obsessive. He would have still been so obsessive over her, however, she would already be his and not have to worry about others ruining that. But i do agree that she would be "an awful and greedy wife no matter who she married."

    2. I disagree with Terra because the situation would have been worse because Gastby would still be in love with Daisy and she would be worse because she would have this thing of guilt that she could push Gastby to do what she wanted and he would have been farther and farther apart

  7. Had Daisy decided to wait for Gatsby, things would have been far worse. Aside from the death of Gatsby, which was inevitable, Gatsby’s world would have come crashing down around him far sooner had he and Daisy always been together. Daisy would have run Gatsby into the ground, always needing more and more and more. Gatsby being the man he was, wanting to give the women he loved ( Daisy) the finest things in life, would have dug himself many more holes with other bootleggers and men like Wolfshiem. Had no one he ended up owing money to decide to off him simply on principle, Daisy and her constant selfish ways would have drove Gatsby far madder than he was when he was under the notion that he could repeat the past. With no commitment from Daisy in their current reality, Gatsby at least has some illusion of hope and fulfillment, allowing him to die with the thoughts of daisy being on the other end of that telephone call. In their current reality, Gatsby died happily and full of hope for what could have been. In the alternate reality where Daisy had waited, Gatsby would have died wondering what he could have done better to make her happy and his days less miserable.

    1. I agree with Sydney. If Daisy would have waited, which after finding out who her character is is pretty unlikely, it would have been worse for Gatsby. Like she said Gatsby at least has the hope of what could have been now, instead of having the disappointment and burden of having to keep Daisy happy.

    2. I disagree because Daisy actually fell for him a little in his backstory and, if she waited, they would have still been rich and capable to live together for their lives happily ever after. They would still be rich. They would be happy because they could be together. If Daisy didn't love him at least a little, she most likely wouldn't have risked betraying her husband to get with Gatsby. They would have a happier life together.

    3. I liked the perspective you put on this. However, I don't agree with the last point where you claimed that Gatsby died happily. He just killed a woman so I feel that he would be very worried on whether or not he would get caught. All this worry would cause him much grief and stress and when he was killed, all of thee feelings were still there. He died with the worrisome thoughts on his mind. I this view, I don't think I can agree that he died happily and/or full of hope.

  8. If Daisy would have waited for Gatsby, which again is hard to consider knowing who Daisy is, it would have been worse for Gatsby. First of all Gatsby has been living off of the hope and wonderment of what could have been with Daisy. If she would have waited he would know exactly what life with Daisy would be like and it didn't look too good. Also, we have to consider how this would have effected Gatsby economically. In reference to Fitzgerald and Zelda, Gatsby would do anything to keep Daisy happy, including giving away his life. Daisy was attracted by money and I can't help but wonder what she would have done with Gatsby's. I believe Gatsby would have died when he died either way, but dying having known what he wanted wasn't so great is kind of depressing.

    1. I agree with Shaena that Daisy was attracted to money. All she was really after in life was money, so i don't think she would have really been attached to Gatsby as much as she was attached to his money.

  9. If Daisy would have waited for Gatsby, things would have been a lot worse. Even though Gatsby's life was lonely, he had it all, so one day he could impress Daisy and claim her again. If Daisy would have waited for him, Gatsby might not have become so successful and Daisy could have broke him since all she wanted was money. Yet, he wouldn't have stopped her because he loved her so much and would do anything to keep her happy. Although Gatsby was killed by Wilson, if Daisy would have waited for him, he might have died out of depression or worse with him being broke which is ultimately worse than Daisy not waiting for Gatsby.

    1. I agree. I think that if Daisy did wait for Gatsby, it would have led him to depression if she eventually denied him when he returned from war. Knowing Daisy, she probably would have gotten rid of Gatsby once she realized he was poor. Also, Gatsby would've never became rich if Daisy had waited because he had nothing to strive for.

    2. I agree to a certain extent. It's very true that Daisy wanted him only for his money, and she was never happy with just him. However, a lot of scenarios could've turned out a lot different if she had waited, perhaps Gatsby would still be alive.

    3. I disagree, Gatsby is a very driven man, but he isn't ignorant. Gatsby would have been forced to realize that Daisy didn't love him, she loved money. With his ambition he could have easily found himself a better life. Without Daisy.

  10. I think if Daisy had waited for Gatsby when he went to war that things would have been worse. I think once Gatsby got back from the war, Daisy was his inspiration to do things. If she had waited, he wouldn't have had an inspiration. He did several improvements trying to get Daisy back. Also, if Daisy waited, Gatsby would have done anything to keep her, which could have had a worse ending than what really happened.

    1. I agree with Shayna that Gatsby did strive on trying to be successful for Daisy. I think she did contribute to Gatsby becoming very wealthy. Daisy pushed Gatsby to be successful because he wanted to be the best for her.

  11. If Daisy did wait for Gatsby both of them would have been more miserable. Daisy needed money to make her happy not love which is why she didn't wait for Gatsby in the first place. To make himself happy Gatsby created a fortune in order to win Daisy over. Gatsby was happy while improving himself and inching closer to his goal. If Daisy had waited for him Gatsby would've have likely never had the ambition that he had to get Daisy. It is apparent that Gatsby's ambition is what drives him makes him happy, this is evident from the schedule and "general resolves" list he made in one of his childhood books. Without having a goal to strive for he is nothing.

  12. Knowing that Daisy is very selfish and only cares about her own well-being, she probably would have denied Gatsby when he came back from the war anyway if she had waited because of how poor he was upon his return. If Daisy would have waited, it would have made matters worse for Gatsby. If Gatsby realized that Daisy wasn’t worth his time if she happened to turn him away when he returned from war, he might have given up on her and realized that she isn’t something he really wants. However, if Gatsby still pursued Daisy after she waited for him and turned him away, he would only be increasing conflict between himself and multiple different characters in the story. Gatsby wouldn’t be killed like he was in the story, but he would still have to live in misery without his beloved Daisy for the rest of his life if she had waited. In my opinion, living like this would be even worse for Gatsby than simply dying.

  13. I think that things would be better if Daisy had waited for him. If Daisy had waited for Gatsby, he still probably had his fortune, which would have gotten them together. He might not have been as rich because he had no real person to impress anymore, but Daisy would have been happy with him because she fell in "love" with him early in life but told him that they couldn't marry because he had little money. He would have still gotten the $25,000. He would've stayed together and he would have never been killed because Tom was the one who got him killed.

  14. I think it would have been worse if Daisy had waited for Gatsby. The reason I think that is because Daisy is what helped Gatsby be successful. He wanted to be better and do better for her in trying to get her back.

Also Daisy was obsessed with money. Just like Zelda was in Fitzgerald's life. I honestly don't think Daisy would have accepted Gatsby after the war because of him being poor. I also don't think Gatsby and Daisy would have lasted very long once he did become wealthy. Daisy probably would have ended up bored. So she probably would of ended up leaving Gatsby. Just like Zelda did when Fitzgerald wasn't bringing home enough money for her.

  15. I think that if Daisy would've put aside her selfishness and wait for Gatsby, who is at war, then the scenario for the both of them would've ended a lot better. It would've prevented a lot of accidents (like the killing of Mrs. Wilson by Daisy which led to Mr. Wilson killing Gatsby). However, Daisy still would not be happy if she waited. She wants money and Gatsby not bringing enough money home made her miserable. All of which is a replica of Fritzgeralds life such as when Zelda leaves Fitzgerald due to him not being able to publish a book.

    1. I agree, but in the sense that because she was selfish there was no way for her to be happy in the first place because there was no room to have or accept happiness from anyone else.

  16. I believe that Gatsby acquired his fame and fortune because of the motivation that Daisy implanted in him. Daisy wanted a rich man to accompany her, and at the time in which they fell in love with each other, Gatsby was not a wealthy individual. As a result, Gatsby worked hard to meet Daisy's standard. Even though Daisy had already married Tom Buchanan by the time Gatsby returned from the war, Gatsby still strove to become wealthy and win Daisy back. Without this motivation, Gatsby may have never acquired the wealth he possessed during the later years of his life, as his parents were rather poor farmers who couldn't supply him with much. In fact, Gatsby's father noted that he received much financial support from Gatsby when he did acquire his wealth. Money isn't everything, but by having it, he got Daisy's attention once again, if nothing else. His involvement with Daisy resulted in very little in the end of it all, but it helped Gatsby come back to reality and realize that Daisy wasn't, in fact, everything that he had fantasized about prior to their reunion. The truth hurts, but it must be known.

    1. I like this view that Gatsby is better off the way things are. I didn't really think of it from a wealth standpoint, but I think True makes a very valid point.

  17. If Daisy waited on Gastby which she never would but if she did she would be sick of the thought of him by the time he got home she would be upset and wanting to go party or do crazy things since she was waiting the entire time he was gone. Daisy would of acted like Gastby owes her because she waited and Gastby would of put up with it and it would be even worse because Gastby would be in love with someone who believes that she is better than him.

  18. I think if Daisy had actually had the fortitude to wait for Gatsby it wouldn't have ended well anyway. Gatsby would have not had a reason to build himself up and Daisy wouldn't really have a reason to stick with him. To think that she wanted to stick around "for love" seems like a pretty big stretch. I think they would just be miserable with each other for a couple years. Gatsby would devote all his time to make Daisy happy and all she would do is brood (and probably drink), not very conducive to a long time love.

  19. If Daisy had waited for him, it would have turned out even worse than it did. Pursuing Daisy was the only thing that motivated Gatsby to better himself and work towards any type of goal. Daisy's absence disciplined Gatsby to a certain extent and was the only thing keeping his life on track.

    1. I didn't even think about that. It's very true that he would still not be satisfied due to losing the chase in getting her. That is a very good point, Luke.

  20. I like that Gabe looked at it from a different standpoint. Not only would Gatsby have been worse off if Daisy had waited on him (because he would've had no motivation to better himself), but Daisy also wouldve been unhappy because she would be unsatisfied with the unaccomplished, poor man that Gatsby was when he returned from the war.

    ReplyDelete
  21. If Daisy would have waited, it would have prevented Tom being cheated on and a major fight between him and Gatsby, but I think that it would be better if she didn't wait and Gatsby got over her, because then that would prevent all of it. There would be no fight, not cheating, but then the story would lose that extra excitement. So, if she would have waited it may have prevented some trouble , but not near as much as it would if Gatsby got over her.

    1. It also would have prevented Gatsby's death along with Mrs. Wilson's. Like I was saying, if he would have gotten over her it would have prevented this, and to keep the excitement in the story (if desired) it could go on to tell how he is without her and if his success continued to flourish or fail.

  22. If Daisy had waited, I believe that Gatsby would have been worse off than before. Near the end of the novel, when Daisy's life after Gatsby was detailed, it said that she flitted from man to man, always getting bored with the men she dated. Eventually, this too would have happened to Gatsby, but been worse because he had fallen even more deeply in love with her, thus breaking his heart.

  23. If Daisy would have waited it would have been worse on Gatsby, because as Paige said, she goes from man roman because she get bored, therefore if she were to have waited for him he would've had hope for something that she knew for a fact wasn't going to work out because of her being the way she was with the others.

  24. I believe that Gatsby's life would have turned out better if Daisy had waited for him. Daisy would have turned Gatsby down in favor of wealth, and Gatsby would have hopefully seen Daisy for who she truly is. He would have been heartbroken at first, and he would never become a tenth as wealthy as he was, but perhaps he could have had a good life, a simple farmer married and with kids. Not as extravagant, but much better than being dead. There is always the possibility that Daisy would have a change of heart and end up with Gatsby, which also ends up in his favor. All around, most scenarios end up better than what actually happened.

  25. I believe that Jay Gatsby's life would have turned out way better if Daisy waited for him to come back. Even though he would be upset about how she really was, it would have prevented the death of himself and Mrs. Wilson. Gatsby would probably end up depressed though.

  26. I believe gatsby' life would have been worse if daisy had waited for him. Primarily because gatsby would have had the same outcome as one of daisy's other men. This would have been tormenting to gatsby due to his deep affection towards daisy. Essentially, daisy would have broken gatsby's heart.

  27. I agree with Sydney that had Daisy waited for Gatsby things would've been far worse. Daisy was a terrible person that would've drove gatsby and herself into the ground anyway. Gatsby did die happily as he continued to live a fantasy life in his head, whereas if Daisy waited for Gatsby would have no fantasy life to escape to and no fortune for himself, this would make him miserable.
