Is Heathcliff a Villain?

Some scholars argue that Heathcliff is the most notorious villain in all of literature while other scholars argue that Heathcliff is simply a victim of his circumstances. At times it's difficult to tell because as readers we are at the mercy of the narrator, in this case it's usually Nelly Dean.
