The Hobbit: Riddles in the Dark

Before responding to the blog, take a few minutes to take a brief quiz based on Chapter 5 of The Hobbit. Yes the quiz counts for a grade, and no you cannot use your group members to help you answer the questions. Click here to take the quiz, and be sure to write your full name when prompted.

Why does Bilbo go along with Gollum's riddle game? Bilbo has the elven dagger on him, he could try to kill Gollum, steal the boat, and make his way out of the goblin-infested tunnels instead of wasting time playing a game with a creature that does not appear to be trustworthy. Although, Gollum obviously knows the passages very well and could flawlessly lead Bilbo out of danger before any goblins have the chance to recapture him.

Make an argument supporting Bilbo's idea of playing the game, or make an argument for why Bilbo should not have played Gollum's game.

Towards the end of the chapter, Bilbo had an opportunity to kill Gollum again; why did he hesitate and then allow Gollum to live? If caught, Gollum would have killed Bilbo for sure, so why did Bilbo take pity on the evil creature?
